Marketing copy is rarely blocked by a lack of ideas. It is blocked by the twenty small decisions between a rough draft and something you are willing to publish: does this headline read well, is the tone right for the channel, does the emoji fit, is the paragraph too long for a phone. Each of those decisions is quick. Together they are the reason a single social post takes an afternoon.

Start with the message, not the wording

Write one sentence that answers: who is this for, what changes for them, and what should they do next. If you cannot write that sentence, no amount of tone editing will save the draft. Once the sentence exists, everything else is variation: a short version for a feed, a longer version for email, a technical version for a developer audience.

Use emoji as structure, not decoration

  1. Pick at most one emoji per line, and only when it replaces a label that would otherwise take a word.
  2. Keep the meaning obvious across cultures. Pointing hands, fire and check marks are widely understood; references tied to a single country are not.
  3. Never let an emoji carry the only copy of important information, because screen readers announce them inconsistently and some clients strip them.
  4. Test the final line on a narrow phone screen. If it wraps onto three lines, cut words rather than shrinking the font.
Read the copy out loud. Sentences that are hard to say out loud are almost always hard to read silently too.

Adjust tone with a checklist, not a feeling

  • Formal or casual? Choose one and keep it consistent from the first line to the call to action.
  • Second person or third person? "You can compress images here" outperforms "Users are able to compress images" in almost every channel.
  • Active or passive voice? Active voice shortens sentences and assigns responsibility.
  • One idea per paragraph. If a paragraph contains two ideas, split it and you have already improved mobile readability.

Check the whole set before you publish

A campaign is usually the same message repeated in five places: the page title, the meta description, the social post, the email subject and the in-app notification. Write them together and read them in sequence, because each one has a different character limit and a different reader. The title has roughly 60 characters before it is truncated. The meta description has roughly 155. The email subject has roughly 45 before mobile clients cut it. Trim to the limit rather than letting the platform do it for you, since platforms truncate at the worst possible word.
